Dystopic cities: two artists explore futurist cities
Through his work The New City Project, architect Liam Young expresses his pessimistic vision of the future with three series of animated panoramas of Samsung City, Edgelands and The City of Sea, each one representing an urban imaginary and dystopia based on the photographs taken during his international expeditions, particularly around China.
This theme of counter-utopia calls to mind the work of Nivanh Chanthara, who created a futurist city for his project Babiru, which also assumed a dark and apocalyptic tone. He was inspired by director John Woo’s movies and the city of Hong Kong. Although he has never been there physically, he drew inspiration from its dizzy architecture and the old and squalid Kowloon Walled City.
