Modu Magazine: A Tale of Urban China

Zhang Song’s vision of urbanization in China

Zhang Song, urban planner, professor and expert in architectural heritage from the Tongji University, criticizes the dehumanization of Chinese urban planning based exclusively on the economic performance of a city, in an interview of China Dialogue entitled: « China’s urban disease ».

His view is that urban development suffers from a lack of legislation and consideration for heritage and from the stranglehold of property developers. Zhang Song refers to some European cities as examples, where modernization was able to protect the original urban layouts, and where the public mobilization around urban, environmental and heritage issues is significant.
