Four Chinese provinces pilot reform of hukou system
Heilongjiang, Henan and Hebei provinces, along with Xinjiang Uyghur autonomous region have suppressed the urban-rural distinction on the residence permits (hukou), China Daily reports. Anyone living there can now exchange their rural or urban hukou for one that simply states “resident”.
This reform covers the provinces’ and regions’ total territories and follows the central government directives on residence permit system reform, published in the State Council document of the 30th of July. The implementation and details of the reforms are to be determined by each provincial government. The aim of this reform is to reduce inequalities between urban and rural areas, and between migrants and citizens, especially in their access to health and education facilities and services.
