Cities of light: the Yangtze River Delta from space

A nocturnal satellite image from the Shanghai municipality, taken during a space expedition and published by SpaceRef, shows us the gigantic conurbation formed by the cities of Shanghai, Kunshan and Suzhou. We can also spot Chongming Island in the Yangtze estuary, illuminated in the middle of a dark and silent mass of water.

But it is of course the brightest place that most attracts the eye: the skyscrapers of Pudong on the East bank of the Pujiang River. Finally, Shanghai’s urban tentacles also appear around its inner city, composed of nine new cities built over a decade.
