Typology: Large scale city planning Contracting authority: Shanghai authorities Main Stakeholders: Dong Dayou (董大酉, 1899-1975) Year: 1931-1935 (Construction of the main public buildings)
The first large scale planning operation in Shanghai took place short after the rise of Kuomintang government in 1927. The Greater Shanghai Plan in the North of the city was meant by Chinese government to prove their ability to manage the city without the foreigners’ help. After 1949, the government abandoned previous plans. However, some buildings from this plan still remain today and epitomize the architectural spirit of that time, combining Western science and Chinese aesthetics. The Municipal Administration Building, the Jiangwan Museum, Library and Stadium are all examples from this period.
