This museum, open five years after the May 2008 earthquake that was deeply damaging for Sichuan Province, killing more than 70 000 people, has been located in the city of Beichuan, north of Chengdu. This vast set of iron buildings, designed by Tongji University – also in charge of a part of the Sichuan reconstruction program –, is covered by a green grass roof, and is rather understated and well integrated in the valley. Yet its structure forms rough cracks between them in remembrance of the tragedy.
