Chongqing became the first inland port open to foreigners in 1891 and was the provisional capital under the Nationalist government during the second Sino-Japanese War. In 1997,it became independent from Sichuan province and was made a priority investment city by the Chinese government in its Western Development strategy. Jiefangbei is Chongqing’s first CBD, characterized by the dense population of skyscrapers due to its location between the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers. It can be observed by taking the cable car over the Yangtze River. Meanwhile, Jiangbeizui new CBD is being built in the Jiangliang New District and is expected to be completed in 2018.
