Built on the peninsula between Hangpu River and Suzhou Creek, this building was first constructed for the Royal Asiatic Society in 1932 by a British architect in an Art-Deco style combining elements from Western and Chinese culture. It hosted one of the first modern Chinese museums. In 2007 the building was renovated into the present Rockbund Art Museum (RAM), with instructions to bring a modern atmosphere. It opened in 2010 with the aim to promote contemporary art on both international and Chinese levels. The museum focuses on various disciplines, by organizing professional temporary art exhibitions and providing both educational and research platforms.
