Typology: Rurban village Main Stakeholders: Ai Weiwei and other artists Year: 2000
In the year 2000, Ai Weiwei settled in this urban village, located between Beijing’s 5th ring road and Airport Expressway, in a house he designed in the same style as the surrounding constructions. The renowned artist designed a few other galleries and art centers that undoubtedly contributed to Caochangdi’s success. Since then Caochangdi has attracted other artists and became a mixed residential area including newly arrived artists, migrant workers, farmers and students. In 2011 the demolition of the area was announced, but by that time the village had already become an international art centre. Thanks to an initiative launched by some artists and inhabitants, it was spared from destruction.
