The Suzhou River has been so heavily polluted since the 1920s that it affected its environment and those living close to it. In the last two decades, several engineering projects and design competitions have been launched in order to revive the Suzhou Creek’s poor quality environment. Despite being a very narrow space, this promenade provides 3.5 km of new river sidewalk with an original design - bridging over the roads, taking the form of a carp, or ending in a park with a lookout tower and tea house. Therefore it became a major link in the city’s public open space network.
