Typology: Former Industrial Area Scale: 9sqkm Contracting authority: National Development and Reform Commission Year: 2010-today
This giant former state-run steelworks factory, which progressively reduced its activity since the 2000s with more than 40,000 workers being relocated to the Bohai Golf, is now closing. Since former Chinese industrial lands have to keep their official status as such, the site is being transformed into a mixed-use area labelled as “creative industry”. A part of the area is devoted to creative and high-tech industries, and the other part has been turned into a park. This reconversion follows the examples of 798 Art District in Beijing and Moganshan Road in Shanghai.
