Collaborative refurbishment of a traditionnal Beijing shared courtyard

Sinapolis Studio, along with the other inhabitants of the courtyard, refurbished and upgraded the traditional common space of this housing unit, typical of Beijing’s old city centre. Shared courtyards or “dazayuan” cover 60 to 80 percent of the protected historical zones in Beijing city centre. However, the conservation system remains weak and cannot entirely protect the homes that so densely populate their areas. This venture stands as a good example of locals leading the redevelopment, bringing their own needs and possibilities to the table.
