Tianzifang neighbourhood is a traditional lilong located at the heart of Shanghai’s former French concession. The network of narrow streets escaped from a demolition program in 2005 thanks to the locals and several business owners who rose against the plan, with the help of the artist Chen Yifei. Since then, its subsequent rise in fame has ensured its permanent protection whilst bringing a new issue: mass tourism.
