In 2003, Ma Qingyun, on request of Sun Jiwei, former party secretary of the district, designed a new shopping centre for the district of Qingpu in Shanghai. The main challenge was to satisfy the future needs of the city while integrating the water town’s original 20th century architecture. As a result, Qingpu District preserves the imprint of the original village in its contemporary architecture, by linking the adjacent temple with the new shopping centre.
