One kilometre of the traditional Zhongshan Street in Hangzhou has been renovated according to the recommendations of Wang Shu and students from the China Academy of Arts (CAA). They accentuated the social aspects and the integration of contemporary architecture into traditional urban fabric. Wang Shu recommended narrowing public road from 24 to 12 meters in order to recreate a more peaceful atmosphere. Moreover, the architect recommended the creation of a canal running in the street and invited about thirty local architecture firms to realize affiliated projects of all kinds.
