The hutong of Dashilar is in a working-class area located in the heart of Beijing. It miraculously escaped from the 2000s demolition plan of the south Tiananmen area and since then has been carefully refurbished into design shops, galleries, while keeping the working-class atmosphere as well as its inhabitants. It also became one of the first spots to host the Beijing Design Week since 2009.
